جارَكَyour neighbor ياO مَضاءَMaḍāʾ فَإِنَّfor indeed جاريmy neighbor
حَرامٌinviolable عِرضُهُhis honor حَتّىuntil يَبيناhe departs
Protect your neighbor, O Maḍāʾ, for my neighbor's
O light, beware of harming your neighbor
Honor is inviolable until he departs.
His honor is sacrosanct, until proven false
وَلاand do not توهيweaken شِمالَكَyour left hand لِلأَعاديfor the enemies
فَقَدfor perhaps تَصِلُjoins الشِمالُthe left hand لَكَfor you اليَميناthe right hand
And do not weaken your left hand for your foes,
And do not point your left hand towards enemies
For the left hand may support your right.
For the left may reach out to the right in friendship
وَلاand do not تَزجُرdrive off كِلابَكَyour dogs وَاِصطَنِعهاand nurture them
لِتُطعِمَهاto feed them كِلابَdogs الأَبعَديناthose far off
And do not drive off your dogs, but nurture them,
Do not chase away your dogs, care for them
So you may feed them the dogs of those far off.
So they may feed the dogs of distant tribes
فَإِنَّfor indeed الثَوبَthe garment يُلبَسُis worn وَهوَwhile it يُؤذيcauses harm
وَلَوand if يُلقىis cast away لَصادَفَwould find لابِسيناwearers
For a garment is worn even though it harms,
For clothes are worn despite causing harm
And if cast away, it would find wearers.
And if discarded, they may clothe others in need
