Our straying horses swept ʿAttab away,

    Then wheeled against al-Hajjaj’s battalions,

Against Thamud’s brother—perhaps they missed him,

And indeed they did all they could in the night march,

Until they left the brother of error sleepless,

Holding out behind walls and a closed gate.

And by the life of Umm al-ʿAbd, had they caught him,

They would surely have given him an undiluted draught, with no admixture.

And indeed death passed Hawshab by,

So he escaped until an appointed time, yet he will not escape.
