ياO باAbu (father of) حُسَينٍHusayn لَوif شَراةُShurāt (self-sacrificing warriors) عَصابَةٍa band
يا با حُسَينٍ لَو شَراةُ عَصابَةٍ
صَبَحوكَthey attacked you at dawn كانَthere would have been لِوَردِهِمfor their coming to water إِصدارُa sending away from water
صَبَحوكَ كانَ لِوَردِهِم إِصدارُ
O Abu Husayn, had a band of Shurāt
O Hussein, if the gang of assassins
attacked you at dawn, their coming to water would have ended in being driven away.
Attacked you at dawn, their attack would be futile,
إِنif يَقتُلوكَthey kill you فَإِنّthen indeed قَتَلَكَyour being killed لَمnot يَكُنwas
إِن يَقتُلوكَ فَإِنّ قَتَلَكَ لَم يَكُن
عاراًa disgrace عَلَيكَupon you وَرُبَّand many a قَتلٍslaying عارُa disgrace
عاراً عَلَيكَ وَرُبَّ قَتلٍ عارُ
If they kill you, your being slain is no
If they kill you, your murder would not
disgrace to you—yet many a slaying is a disgrace.
Be a disgrace, though some deaths are disgraceful.
ياO باAbu (father of) حُسينٍHusayn وَالجَديدُand what is new إِلىto بِلىًdecay
يا با حُسينٍ وَالجَديدُ إِلى بِلىً
أَولادُsons of دَرزَةَDarza أَسلَموكَthey abandoned you وَطارواand they flew away
أَولادُ دَرزَةَ أَسلَموكَ وَطاروا
O Abu Husayn, and all that is new is bound for decay:
O Hussein, the sharp swords are engaged
Darza's sons abandoned you and flew away.
The sons of Derzeh submitted you and fled.
