أَبكيI weep for الَّذينَthose who تَبوأواtook up residence الغُرَفَthe chambers العُلىlofty
أَبكي الَّذينَ تَبوأوا الغُرَفَ العُلى
فَجَرَتso flowed لَهُمfor them مِنfrom تَحتِهاbeneath them الأَنهارُthe rivers
فَجَرَت لَهُم مِن تَحتِها الأَنهارُ
I weep for those who took their abode in the lofty chambers.
I weep for those who dwell in lofty halls
So rivers flowed for them from beneath those chambers.
Beneath which rivers flow;
أَبكيI weep لِنَفسيfor myself لاnot لَهُمfor them أَبكيهِمُI mourn them
أَبكي لِنَفسي لا لَهُم أَبكيهِمُ
لاno صَبرَpatience حَيثُwhere تَعارُفُmutual acquaintance الأَبرارِthe righteous
لا صَبرَ حَيثُ تَعارُفُ الأَبرارِ
I weep for myself; not for their sake do I mourn them.
I weep for my own fate, not theirs,
There is no patience where the righteous know one another.
Where patient souls forego.
