I feel a shudder come over me,

And death flows on through my aorta,

And a wave of unconsciousness engulfs me.

So draw near to me and touch me.

Pass your palms over my brow.

And before I lie down, speak to me.

Tell me the story of the years,

The tale of the wretched wanderer:

He roamed across his miserly wasteland,

    Drinking from its treacherous mirage,

And complaining of the highlands to the rugged lands,

    And knew exile aboard ships,

And wandered through the harbors of madness,

    Like a foolish, witless Sindbad,

And returned with fever and sorrows,

Laden with a cheated man's bargain.

Bring the book of verse; recite to me

    A poem of wondrous resonance,

That I wrote in a time of enchantment,

In the days when my eyes were innocent,

    Before illusion's suicide in certainty,

And the middle-aged man's rage against the unborn child,

And my awakening to sorrowful reality.

Do you remember now? Remind me

Of my innocence in centuries long past,

Before the coming of accursed time,

It sells me at times, and buys me,

It gives me money, yet does not enrich me,

It pours me water, yet does not quench my thirst,

And puts shackles on my right hand,

And scorns my poetry, and scorns me.

Oh, the misery of the imprisoned nightingale

    In the precious gilded cage,

    Singing whatever melodies it sings,

    Faint, warm in their concerns,

Like blood flowing from someone stabbed.

I am weary of my seriousness and my wantonness,

Of everything in my crowded world,

Of a theater whose arts are mummified:

    Scenes with faded coloring,

A song badly set to music,

A woman gone gray, who no longer tempts me.

I am fed up with the theater—take me out.

Pass your palms over my brow.

    And before I lie down,

    Bid me farewell.
