Summer is departing—rise, and let us

Shed two tears to bid him farewell.

    He was generous—kind, kind.

He loved us with the love of both parents.

He prepared a seat for us in the sun,

And two swings in the shade of roses.

And he made the sea a home for us,

So we are two guests upon two waves.

And he turned the sand into pearls,

With which we build a palace or two castles.

And made me a youth again after my hair had grayed,

Whose freshness makes every eye marvel.

He crowned us: I, the prince of love,

And you, the loveliest of maidens in East and West.

Summer is departing—oh, how I grieve

For a time like silver dust!

For a while it was ours, and we were its—

So why did it slip from our two palms?

Summer is departing, and I remain,

Walking on snow in Hunayn's two slippers.

And snow is in my house, and in my ribs,

And in my rhymes, and in my two locks of hair.

    أشك أن يبصرني مرتين

    Summer saw me here once;

I doubt he will see me a second time.
