A path of love, not a path of stone—

this is what carried the oases in flight to the islands.

It led the tents to the shores, and they glided

across the waters—a sail, white with bashfulness.

What do I see? A boat surging through the water,

or is it a camel that has not tired of travel?

And are these diving songs in my ear,

or have the camel-drivers sung verse before dawn?

And a drowsy palm awoke, whispering to me:

Who has garlanded the palms with shells and pearls?

I have forgotten where I am: indeed, Riyadh is here,

with Manama, both engrossed in nighttime conversation.

Or is this Jeddah, who has come with her stars?

Or has Muharraq visited us with the moon?

And are these dawn's peals of laughter in Khobar,

or has Riffa cast her gaze in the season of rain?

Or is it dusky Muscat, my visitor?

Or is it green Doha in Qatar?

Or Kuwait, who greeted me—so I fell in love with her?

Or is it Al Ain—what beauty in the eye's black and white!

Bedouins and sailors—what is the difference between them?

And land and sea both flow from Mudar.

    فهلْ يقربُنا خيطٌ مِنَ البَشَرِ؟

    O Gulf, surely God's ropes bind us together;

so does a thread of human making bring us closer?
