    God bears witness that you are martyrs.

    The prophets and the saints bear witness

    That you died so that my Lord's word might be exalted

    In lands exalted by the Night Journey.

    You committed suicide?! We are the ones who committed suicide

    Through a life whose dead are the living.

    O people! We have died—so come,

    Let us hear what the elegy says of us.

    وبكينا.. حتى ازدرانا البكاءُ

    We were so helpless that helplessness complained of us;

    And we wept until weeping despised us;

    ورجونا.. حتى استغاث الرجاءُ

    And we bowed until bowing recoiled in disgust;

    And we hoped until hope cried for help.

    And we complained to the tyrants of a house

    White—its heart filled with darkness.

    And we kissed Sharon's shoe—until

    The shoe cried: "Easy! You have torn me to pieces!"

    O people! We have died—but

    The dusty earth disdained to embrace us.

    Say to Ayat: O bride of lances,

    All beauty is a ransom for your two eyes.

    When the stallions—the elite of my people—are castrated,

    The beautiful woman stands up to the criminal.

    She kisses death, laughing with joy,

    And from death the leaders flee.

    The gardens of Paradise opened their gate and greeted you,

    And Fatima al-Zahra received you.

    Tell whoever embellished the fatwas: Not so fast!

    Many a fatwa makes the heavens cry out.

    When jihad calls, ink falls silent,

    And so do the reed pen, the books, and the jurists.

    الفتاوى، يوم الجهاد، الدماءُ

    When jihad calls, no fatwa is sought;

    The fatwas, on the day of jihad, are blood.
