Is this you? Or is it my imagination
Is it you? Or is this my imagination
that revealed you, with a sea of nights between us?
Your beauty...and between us is the sea of nights?

My Cairo! Do you remember my face
I am your young man, tormented by beauty.
That is tortured by your beauty?

Ask your father the Nile, he testifies
to my sincerity in estrangement—and in union.
To my sincerity in estrangement and reunion

torn apart by the years, which do not care.
Shredded by years...and don't care

And stumble when I walk in the shadows

I passed by the dwellings and lost my way among them,
I passed by the houses...and put in them

A lost stranger among the men

إلىto المآلthe final destination؟
And where are the companions? Have they all returned
And where are the friends.. Have they all
as youth returned—to its final destination?
Passed away as youth..to the inevitable end?

Here youth used to dictate the rhymes,
So I'd write them.. for the gazelle's eyelids
so I would write them for the gazelle's eyelids.

And poetry used to lure the maidens to me,
As misguidance entices one to stray
as guidance is seduced by error.
So I'm saddened by the answer...and the question

Here—and today I ask about my life,
My Cairo! We parted for a third of a century
only to be stricken by the answer—and by the question.
Can I tell you what was revealed to me?
أقاهرتيO my Cairo! افترقناwe parted ثلثَa third of قرنٍa century
فهلso may ...? ليfor me أنto أبثكِconfide in you ماwhat بداappeared ليto me؟
O my Cairo! We have been apart a third of a century;
I traversed the desert plains..until
so may I confide in you what has unfolded before me?
My feet complained of the long journey
ذرعتُI traversed مناكبthe shoulders of الصحراءthe desert..
شكتْcomplained منof طولthe length of رحلتهاtheir journey رحاليmy saddles
I traversed the desert's shoulders, until
And sailed the sea..with my sail
my saddles complained of their journey's length.
Pushing me to the unknown..in the islands of the impossible
وجبتُand I crossed البحرthe sea.. يدفعنيdriving me شراعيmy sail
إلىtoward المجهولِthe unknown.. فيamong جُزرِthe islands of المُحالِthe impossible
And I crossed the sea, my sail driving me
And I embraced happiness in its glory
toward the unknown, among the islands of the impossible.
And adversity overturned me on the spears
وعانقتُand I embraced السعادةhappiness فيat ذراهاits summits
وقلبنيand rolled me الشقاءmisery علىupon النصالِthe blades
And I embraced happiness at its summits,
I sipped victory..and gulped defeat
and misery rolled me over blades.
So the honey died in the poison of mortality
كرعتُI gulped هزيمةًdefeat.. ورشفتُand I sipped نصراًvictory
فماتso died الشهدthe honey فيin سمthe venom of الصلالthe vipers
I gulped defeat and sipped victory,
I became shallow...and the clamour of friends around me
so the honey died in the vipers' venom.
And I became deep...though the cores hurt like arrows
ضحلتُI grew shallow.. وضجةُand the clamor of الأصحابthe companions حوليaround me
ونحتُand I mourned.. وللنوىand separation has وخزُthe sting of النبالِthe arrows
I grew shallow, with my companions' clamor around me,
And I returned from battles..I don't know
and I mourned; separation has the sting of arrows.
Why I wasted my life in fighting
وعدتُand I returned منfrom المعاركthe battles.. لستُI am not أدريI know
علامَfor what? أضعتُI wasted عُمريmy life فيin النزالِcombat
And I returned from the battles, not knowing
And what about you? Have you experienced after me
why I had wasted my life in combat.
The terrors that break mountains?
وماذاand what عنكِof you؟ هلhave ...? جربتyou experienced بعديafter me
منof الأهوالِthe terrors قاصمةshattering الجبالِmountains؟
And what of you? Have you experienced, since I left,
And have you suffered what I suffered..a wound
terrors that shatter mountains?
That the doctor frowns at! Without healing?
وهلand have ...? عانيتِyou suffered ماwhat عانيتُI suffered.. جُرحاًa wound
تجهّمهfrowned at it الطبيبُthe doctor! بلاwithout اندمالhealing؟
And have you suffered what I suffered—a wound
Do I see a glimmer of a teardrop in your eyes
at which the doctor frowned, with no healing?
That turned you, my love, to my state?
علىupon عينيكِyour eyes ألمحI glimpse برقa flash of دمعٍtears
أحالكِis your condition ياO حبيبةُbeloved مثلlike حاليmy condition؟
Upon your eyes I glimpse a flash of tears;
Is your plight, beloved, like mine?
