Beirut! Alas for you! Where are the enchantment and the fragrance?

And where is enchantment poured upon the shores?

And where is our voyage, with longing as our vessel?

And the sea, a horizon of dreams raised up?

    And you, full-breasted and pampered,

Your world a promise made fertile by longing for union.

In your eyes are the fiercest of passions,

And on your lips, a hint and a welcome.

And in my right hand, roses I came to plant

Upon braids where the night is crucified.

Beirut! What do people say? Have they been slaughtered—

The white hopes—and has the wolf slain the little girl?

And has a fair one vanished who once held me captive,

And has a beloved died before the promised day?

And where is what once was, O Beirut, when they danced—

The nights, for me—and wonders bore me aloft?

And where is beautiful verse I do not remember,

Written upon the pines and apple trees?

And where is the first love that embraced me and departed,

While its flame blazes in the heart's recesses?

    فإنه في دمائي الحمر معصوب

    Beirut! Do not describe the wound to me—I know it;

For it is bandaged in my red blood.

I am the one the Romans took captive, whom they never reached—

The Arabian steeds—and whom the Bedouin Arabs betrayed.

    I bore the pains in my liver, and it split apart;

And trials hurled me into despair.

Ah, these leaders toy with me—and I adore them!

And perhaps a stricken person loves being scorned.

How often they suckled me on the draught of delusion; how often they mocked

Me—and how often lies violated my soul.

    My well-aged heedlessness never ends,

Nor have those tricks of theirs ever ended.

Beirut! We are the ones who drove you naked

To death, torture screaming in your eyes.

How often pleading lips within you implored us,

And how often chastity stolen from you called to us.

Yet no conscience awoke within our breasts,

Drugged and veiled on the shores of falsehood.

Even when the executioner laughed, no tears welled

In any eye, nor did the grief-stricken choke on sighs.

You fell, and history rose up, cursing us,

And the prayer niches bowed their heads in glory's sorrow.

We wander after a peace hard to attain,

And Urqub grew weary of its ever-deferred promise.

    We lived with humiliation until it loathed our company;

We slept upon patience until Job cried out.

Is it whenever someone among them rises to slaughter us

That we say, "Peace, despite its flaws, is desired"?

And whenever aggression plays the lion, it is blessed

By a coward among us, drawn toward submission.

The land returns only when it is washed

By a downpour of wounds and fire on the day of conquest.
