We were sitting beneath a wall clock without clouds

as if beside the spring of fleeting time.

The young woman nearest us was speaking Sanskrit,

and one of them asked her about a road that does not exist.

    Behind us, a town.

Her eyes—the hours of idleness had widened them.

    We were creasing touches

that had long clung to the glass of rain’s windows,

and rust had reached our fingertips.

Two late children with nothing to do,

their two faces of no use to anyone.

We let the grass grow around us

    like a sin we needed,

    and we dreamed of disappearing,

masked at last by this whim with long lashes,

freed from every presence and every place.

That was a day inlaid with oblivion,

    like a Baroque church,

a day that lacked the strength to dawn

    and see us growing pale.
