عجبتُ لهذهِ الدُّنيا

عجبتُ لهذهِ الدُّنيا

ولا أخفيكُمُ عَجَبي

ولا أخفيكُمُ عَجَبي

I marveled at this world,

I'm astonished by this world

And I do not hide my wonder from you.

And I won't hide my astonishment from you

فكَم من مَذهَبٍ فيه

فكَم من مَذهَبٍ فيه

وكم فيها مِنَ الشُعَبِ

وكم فيها مِنَ الشُعَبِ

For how many creeds it holds,

How many doctrines in it

And how many branches within it!

And how many paths in it

يناقضُ بعضُها بعضً

يناقضُ بعضُها بعضً

تحيّرُنا بلا سبَبِ

تحيّرُنا بلا سبَبِ

Some contradict others,

Some contradict others

They bewilder us for no reason.

Perplexing us without cause

فكلٌّ يدَّعي وَعْدًا

فكلٌّ يدَّعي وَعْدًا

سَماويا، وخيرَ نبي

سَماويا، وخيرَ نبي

For each claims a promise

Each claims a heavenly promise

From heaven, and the best of prophets,

And a good prophet

وآمالاً بفردَوسٍ

وآمالاً بفردَوسٍ

بُعَيدَ الموتِ مُرتَقَبِ

بُعَيدَ الموتِ مُرتَقَبِ

And hopes for a paradise

And hopes for Paradise

Awaited shortly after death.

After death expected

وذو التقوى بمذهبهِ

وذو التقوى بمذهبهِ

بحُكمِ الآخرينَ غبي!

بحُكمِ الآخرينَ غبي!

And one who is pious in his creed

And the pious one by his doctrine

Is a fool in others' judgment!

Is a fool by others' judgment!

لماذا أيها الباري

لماذا أيها الباري

جعَلتَ الكونَ في صَخَبِ؟

جعَلتَ الكونَ في صَخَبِ؟

Why, O Creator,

Why, Oh Creator

Have You set the universe in tumult?

Did you make the universe in commotion?

فأينَ الحقُّ يا ربي

فأينَ الحقُّ يا ربي

وفيمَن أرتجي أرَبي؟

وفيمَن أرتجي أرَبي؟

Where, then, is truth, O my Lord,

So where is the truth, my Lord

And in whom may I hope to find what I desire?

And in whom should I seek guidance, my Lord?
