I called the sons of Qays to me, and they girded themselves—
I invited the tribe of Banu Qais to me, so they rolled up their sleeves,
Champions from Sa'd, long of forearm.
Stout warriors from Sa`d with long forearms,
إِذاwhen متI die (unvocalized; also possibly 'you die') قُلوبُhearts of القَومِthe people طارَتflew مَخافَةًin fear

When I die, the people's hearts fly in fear
When people's hearts are seized with fear of death,
Of death; they anchor their noble souls.
They charge with their souls into the path of death.
