Alas for my wounded horizon—it has overflowed with darkness,

    Grim-faced, its darkness pitch-black.

Suhayl has wearied of its sorrowful face,

And so have the Pleiades and every radiant star.

And my green banks seethed with thorns,

Deadly in their pricking, scowling and dreadful.

    بين أنيابها اغتيال المصير

    And on my path are black vipers;

Between their fangs, destiny is murdered.

Whenever resolve flared up within me,

Visions of the crushing hiss struck it dumb.

So my steps collapsed, slain—how, then,

Can my journey go on amid banks of fangs?

How can I go on when falsehood is creed and nature,

And vile hypocrisy is the bridge across?

And distortion of the standard has become right,

And radiant right is the worst of evils?

Speak on, Bashshar—lavish eloquence and verse

Of light and wisdom and perfumes.

Do not say, 'How can a blind man bestow light?'

He whose feelings are alive is not blind.

The blind are only those whom darkness has enfolded,

In the hearts that rest within their breasts.

So behold the misshapen world with a heart

    Pulsing with translucent, discerning radiance.

You will see no nightingale singing in the trees,

But bats in the plumage of falcons.

And the feeble lesser birds have wreaked havoc

In their haunts, in the absence of eagles.
