A dream escaped from my morning,

and sorrow penetrates deep into my wounds.

Her tenderness, the maiden of roses,

    walks with a tattered wing.

In your fragrance there is a funeral,

    sister of lilies and daisies.

And the night after you is pensive,

and the light after you is in lamentation.

    The roses walk in mourning,

and the weddings of the fair choke.

    Morning folded its wing

the day you fell with the morning.

I, O love of swaying splendor

    and generous hopes—

I, the day sorrow plucked you

into tresses that die with the winds,

wrapped your fragrance in my blood,

a memory of youth and merriment,

    when spring was my pillow

and spring's dew was on my scarf.

Sleep; I feel you as a spell of intoxication

    that passed over my cup and my wine;

and it is as though your fragrance in my blood

lives on a hope within reach.
