يَهلُّdawns، إذاwhen خطرْتِyou passed علىalong دروبيmy paths؟
Your tenderness! What color, what fragrance
Your tenderness, what color is it, what fragrance
dawns when you cross my paths?
Exhales, when you pass by my paths?
يكادalmost القفرُthe wasteland يُخصبgrows fertile فيin خياليmy imagination
وينْدَىand grows dewy بالشعاعwith radiance وبالطيوبِand with perfumes
The wasteland almost grows fertile in my imagination
The desert almost grows fertile in my imagination
and grows dewy with radiance and perfumes.
And glistens with rays and aromas
كأنكِas though you أنتyou وحدَكyou alone فيamong الصباياthe maidens
هوًىlove حلوٌsweet وكَرَّةُand a refrain of عندليبa nightingale
As though you—you alone among the maidens—
As if you alone among the maidens
were sweet love and a nightingale’s refrain.
Are a sweet yearning and a chirping nightingale
حملْتُI carried هواكِlove for you فيin هُدبيَّmy lashes حلمًاas a dream
أخافI fear عليهfor it منfrom غمْضٍa closing of the eyes مُريبdisquieting
I carried my love for you in my lashes as a dream;
I carried your love in my bosom’s folds as a dream
I fear for it a disquieting closing of the eyes,
I fear for it from a disturbing squint
وأُشفقand I dread أنthat يُلِمَّmay alight بهupon it خيالٌa phantom
منfrom الماضيthe past المثقَّلِweighed down بالذنوبwith sins
and dread that a phantom may alight upon it
And I dread that an apparition from the past
from the past weighed down with sins.
Weighted down with sins may blemish it
حنانكِyour tenderness ماnot الربيعspring أحنُّgentler وجْهًاof face
وأطيبُand more fragrant منthan ندائكِyour call: ياO حبيبيmy beloved
Your tenderness! Spring is no gentler of face,
Your tenderness, how more blissful is its face than spring
nor more fragrant than your call: ‘O my beloved!’
And how sweeter than your call: My beloved
إذاwhen تُلقينyou cast فيinto عينيَّmy eyes همّاًsorrow

When you cast sorrow into my eyes
When you cast worries in my eyes
and sunset’s yellow hues upon my face,
And the yellowness of sunset on my face

ويغمرُنيand floods me الضياءُthe radiance علىdespite شحوبيmy pallor
your palm wipes away dew-moistened weariness,
Your palm wipes the drawn out fatigue
and radiance floods me despite my pallor.
And brightness overwhelms me over my paleness
