ياO غائِبًاabsent one وَand نَجاوَىsecret whispers الرُّوحِof the soul تَرعاهُwatch over him
أَودَعتُI entrusted فِيكَin you دَمِيmy blood وَand الحافِظُthe guardian اللَّهُGod
O absent one, whom the soul's secret whispers watch over,
O absent one, and the soul's whispers tend it,
I have entrusted my blood to you, and God is its guardian.
I have entrusted my blood to you, and God is its keeper,
سَلِّمْgreet هُناكَthere عَلىto الذِّكرَىthe memory إِذاwhen خَطَرَتْit comes to mind
وَand قُلْsay لَهاto it : ( إِنَّنِيindeed I بِالعِشقِwith love أَوَّاهُever sighing
Greet the memory there whenever it comes to mind,
Send greetings there when it comes to mind,
And tell it: 'I am ever sighing with love,
And say to it: (Indeed I am infatuated with love for him
وَand إِنَّهُindeed he وَand إِذاif غابَتْvanished مَلامِحُهُhis features
فَإِنَّthen indeed لِيfor me أَمَلًاa hope أَنِّيthat I سَأَلقاهُI shall meet him )
And indeed, even if his features vanish,
And though his features are absent
I still have hope that I shall meet him.'
I still have hope that I will meet him again)
ياO ساكِنًاdweller فِيin ضَمِيرِيmy innermost being قَدْindeed عَوَىhowled وَجَعِيmy pain
فاسمَعْso hear مِنَfrom الحَزَنِthe sorrow المَوصُولِunceasing شَكواهُits complaint
O you who dwell in my innermost being, my pain has howled;
O dweller in my conscience, my pain has howled,
So hear, from unbroken sorrow, its lament.
So listen to the connected sorrow's complaint,
وَand اضمُمْclasp إِلَيكَto you فُؤادًاa heart لَستَyou are not تُنكِرُهُyou disown it
قَدْindeed نالَsuffered مِنْfrom قَهرِهِits torment ماwhat كانَused to يَخشاهُfear it
And clasp to yourself a heart you do not disown,
And draw near a heart you do not deny,
It has endured, through its torment, what it once feared.
It has endured from his oppression what it had feared,
لَقَدْindeed بَعَثتُI sent إِلَيكَto you الحَرفَthe written word مُختَنِقًاchoking
يَفِيضُoverflows مِنْfrom نَبضِهِits pulse بِالوَجدِwith longing مَعناهُits meaning
I have indeed sent you the written word, choking;
Indeed I sent to you the letter suffocating,
From its pulse, its meaning overflows with longing.
Overflowing from its pulse with tender meaning,
فامدُدْso extend لَهُto it مِنْfrom يَدَيكَyour two hands الوَصلَunion حَيثُwherever أَتَىit came
وَand انفَحْwaft عُطُورَكَyour perfumes تَسرِيflow فِيin حناياهُits recesses
So extend to it, from your hands, the bond of union wherever it arrives,
So extend to it from your hands the connection where it came
And waft your perfumes, letting them flow through its recesses.
And scatter your fragrances they wander in its folds,
وَand طِرْfly لِذاكَto that الزَّمانِthe time الحُلوِsweet فِيin طَرَبٍrapture
وَand ارجِعْreturn بِهِwith it عَلَّناperhaps we نَحظَىwe may enjoy بِذِكراهُwith its memory
And fly to that sweet time in rapture,
And flutter for that sweet time in confusion,
And return with it; perhaps we may enjoy its memory.
And return with it so we may enjoy remembering it,
إِنْif مَرَّpassed by طَيفِيَmy phantom فاعطِفْthen be tender إِنَّهُindeed it كَلِفٌlovesick
وَand افسَحْmake room فَإِنَّfor indeed شَغافَinnermost core القَلبِof the heart مَسراهُits path
If my phantom passes by, be tender; it is lovesick,
If my specter passes, turn to it, for it is tired,
And make room, for the heart's innermost core is its path.
And make way for the fervor of the heart is its pavement,
أَمَّاbut إِذاwhen مَرَّتِpassed by الأَنسامُthe breezes تَحمِلُنِيcarrying me
فارفِقْthen be gentle بِمَنْwith whoever صَرَخَتْshe cried out : ( واalas حَرَّthe burning of قَلباهُmy heart )
But when the breezes pass by, carrying me,
As for when the gentle breezes pass bearing me,
Then be gentle with her who cried: 'Alas, the burning of my heart!'
Then be kind to one who cried: (Oh the burning of its heart!)
حَبَوتُكَI bestowed on you المُهجَةَthe soul الخَضراءَgreen مُتَّكَأًas a resting place
لانَتْsoftened حناياهُits recesses وَand ازدانَتْbecame adorned زَواياهُits corners
I bestowed on you my green soul as a resting place;
I have loved you, the green, tender meadow, resting
Its recesses softened, and its corners were adorned.
Its folds have hummed and its corners adorned,
فَكَيفَso how أُنكِرُI disown قَلبًاa heart أَنتَyou صاحِبُهُits owner ؟
وَand كَيفَhow أُنكِرُI deny وُدًّاa love أَنتَyou مَولاهُits master ؟
So how can I disown a heart that belongs to you?
So how can I deny a heart whose companion you are?
And how can I deny a love whose master you are?
And how can I deny a love whose master you are?
أَقسَمتُI swore : ( إِنِّيindeed I وَby رَبِّthe Lord of البَيتِthe House أَهواهُI love him
إِنْif ضَرَّنِيharms me الدَّهرُtime فِيهِon his account لَستُI am not أَنساهُI forget him )
I swore: 'Indeed, by the Lord of the House, I love him;
I swore: (Indeed, by the Lord of the house, I love him
Even if time harms me on his account, I shall not forget him.'
If time harms me, I will not forget him)
