ياليلO night الصبُّthe lovesick one أتىhas come غدُهُhis tomorrow
قدalready مالhas swayed بقلبـيwith my heart موعـدُهhis tryst ُ
O night, the lovesick one's morrow has come.
O night of passion, tomorrow has come
His tryst has already swayed my heart.
As it leaned towards my heart, its tryst
أإذاis it when قدalready حانَhas come due لناfor us وصـلunion ُ
جهدتْstrove أقدارٌfates تُبعـدُهto keep it distant ُ؟!
Just when the time for our union has come,
If our union's time has come
do fates strive to keep it far away?
Will the fates that distance it prevail?!
شوقيmy longing مكلومwounded ٌ مضطربdistraught ُ
حرفيmy words ملتـاثٌbewildered يقصـدُهseek him ُ
My longing is wounded, distraught;
My ardent love is anguished and restless
my bewildered words seek him.
My words are confused as they seek it
ياليلٌO night عهدكyour pledge مؤتلقٌradiant
أتراكَI wonder whether you غـداًtomorrow ستجـدِّدهwill renew it ُ؟!
O night, your pledge is radiant;
O night, your promise is suspended
will you, I wonder, renew it tomorrow?
Will you renew it tomorrow?!
فالبينfor parting ُ بناwith us غَرِمinfatuated ٌ..
وبنـاand upon us أرقsleeplessness ٌ.. ماأجلـدُهُhow tireless it is! !
For parting is infatuated with us—ravenous;
Separation from us is a creditor... voracious
and sleeplessness besets us—how tireless it is!
And in us is insomnia... how patient is it!
ومضىand has passed زمنٌa time كمhow often روَّعنـاit terrified us
وأناwhile I فـيin ولـهٍpassionate yearning أنشـدُهُI seek him
And a time that so often terrified us has passed,
And time has passed, how much it terrified us
while I seek him in lovesick yearning.
While I am in bewilderment, reciting it
تركleft الرُّthe wan- حَّال-derers ُ مرابعهـمtheir dwellings
وأنـاwhile I يسكننـيinhabits me مرقـدُهُhis resting place
The wanderers left their dwellings,
The travellers left their dwellings
while his resting place dwells within me.
While I am inhabited by its burial
خذtake ياليليO my night عمـراa lifetime ً منِّـيfrom me
فهوfor he العمرlife itself ُ وأنـاand I غـدُهُhis tomorrow
Take a lifetime from me, O my night,
Take from me a lifetime, O my night
for he is life itself, and I am his tomorrow.
For it is that lifetime, and I am its tomorrow
فهـوايَso my love الليلـةtonight أنْثـرهI strew it ُ
وعلـىand upon كفّيـهhis two palms أبــدِّدُهُI scatter it
So tonight I strew my love,
So my passion tonight, I will scatter it
and scatter it upon his palms.
And in his palms I will dissipate it
لوif تعرفyou knew ُ ياصبُّO lovesick one حنينيmy yearning
لفررتyou would flee َ إليـهto him تقصـدُهyou seek him ُ
If you knew, O lovesick one, my yearning,
If you know, O morning yearning
you would flee to him, seeking him.
You would have fled to seek it
ذاكthat الغِرِّيدsongbird ُ علىupon فننـيmy bough
مازلتI still ُ بـهon it ِ أتَرصَّـدُهُI lie in wait for him
That songbird upon my bough—
That singing nightingale on my boughs
I still lie in wait for him there.
I am still lurking to catch it
وجـدٌpassion أسلمنـيhas surrendered me لأنينـيto my moaning
كمhow often أسهدنيit has kept me awake , كـمhow often أسهـدهُI keep it awake !
Passion has given me over to my moaning;
And a love that surrendered me to my wailing
how often it has kept me awake; how often I keep it awake!
How much it wears me down, how much I wear it down!
