حَلَلناwe dwelt آمِنينَsecure بِخَيرِin the best of عَيشٍlife
وَلَمand did not يَشعُرُknow بِناof us واشٍa talebearer يَكيدُplots
We dwelt secure, enjoying the best of life,
and no scheming talebearer knew of us.
وَلَمand did not نَشعُرwe sense بِجِدِّof the seriousness of البَينِparting حَتّىuntil
أَجَدَّmade earnest البَينَthe parting سَيّارٌa traveler عَنودُheadstrong
Nor did we sense that parting was in earnest, until
a headstrong traveler made the parting real,
وَحَتّىand until قيلَit was said قَوَّضَstruck camp آلُthe household of بِشرٍBishr
وَجاءَهُمand came to them بِبَينِهُمُwith their departure البَريدُthe courier
and until it was said, 'Bishr's household has struck camp,'
and the courier brought them word of their departure.
وَأَبرَزَتِand revealed الهَوادِجُthe howdahs ناعِماتٍdelicate women
عَلَيهِنَّupon them المَجاسِدdyed robes وَالعُقودُand necklaces
And the howdahs revealed delicate women,
wearing dyed robes and necklaces.
فَلَمّاthen when وَدَّعوناthey bade us farewell وَاِستَقَلَّتand set off
بِهِمwith them قُلُصٌyoung she-camels هَواديهِنَّtheir necks قودُlong
Then, when they bade us farewell and were borne away
by young she-camels with long necks,
كَتَمتُI concealed عَواذِليmy female reproachers ماwhat فيin فُؤاديmy heart
وَقُلتُand I said لَهُنَّto them (women) لَيتَهُمُif only they were بَعيدُfar away
I hid what lay in my heart from the women who reproached me,
and said to them, 'If only they were far away!'
فَجالَتthen welled up عَبرَةٌa tear أَشفَقتُI was afraid مِنهاof it
تَسيلُflowing كَأَنَّas though واِبِلَهاits downpour فَريدُunstrung pearls
Then a tear welled up, to my alarm,
flowing as though its shower were unstrung pearls.
فَقالواthen they said قَدindeed جَزِعتَyou gave way to grief فَقُلتُso I said كَلّاno indeed
وَهَلand does ...? يَبكيweep مِنfrom الطَرَبِemotional agitation الجَليدُthe steadfast man
They said, 'You have given way to grief!' I said, 'No!
And would a steadfast man weep from emotion?
وَلكِنّيbut I أَصابَstruck سَوادَthe pupil of عَينيmy eye
عُوَيدُa tiny splinter قَذىًof debris لَهُit has طَرَفٌa point حَديدُsharp
But the pupil of my eye was struck
by a speck—a tiny splinter with a sharp point.'
فَقالواthen they said ماwhy لِدَمعِهِماwith the tears of both سَواءٌalike
أَكِلتاboth ...? مُقلَتَيكَyour two eyes أَصابَstruck عودُa twig
They said, 'Why do both eyes weep alike?
Did a twig strike both your eyes?
لَقَبلَeven before دُموعِthe tears of عَينِكَyour eye خَبَّرتَناtold us
بِماof what جَمجَمتَyou kept concealed زَفرَتُكَyour sigh الصَعودُrising
Even before your eye shed tears, we were told
by your rising sigh what you kept concealed.
فَقُمso rise وَاِنظُرand look يَزِدكَwill increase for you مِطالَprolongation شَوقٍof longing
هُنالكَthere مَنظَرٌa sight مِنهُمof them بَعيدُdistant
So rise and look: your longing will be prolonged
by a distant glimpse of them over there.'
