شَمَمْتُI smelled قَمِيصَthe shirt of اليُمْنِgood fortune وَالنَّاسُand the people سَاهِيَةْheedless
لَهُit has نَفْحَةٌa waft of fragrance مَاnot زِلْتُI have ceased أَسْأَلُI ask مَاwhat هِيَهْit
I smelled the shirt of good fortune while the people were heedless.
It has a waft of fragrance; I keep asking what it is.
شَمَمْتُI smelled بِرُوحِيwith my soul لَاnot بِأَنْفِيwith my nose عَبِيرَهُits fragrance
فَثَارَتْso they rose بَنَاتُdaughters of الفِكْرِthought ثَوْرَةَan uprising دَاهِيَةْformidable
I smelled its fragrance with my soul, not with my nose.
So the daughters of thought rose in a formidable uprising.
تَطَرَّزْتُI embroidered myself وَإِذْand when شَهْرُthe month of الصِّيَامِfasting بَدَاappeared لَنَاto us
بِآيٍwith signs مِنَof الخَيْرَاتِgoodness لَاnot مُتَنَاهِيَةْfinite
I embroidered myself as the month of fasting appeared to us,
With signs of boundless goodness.
أَتَىhas come رَمَضَانُRamadan يَاO عِبَادُservants فَشَمِّرُواso gird yourselves
عَسَىmay it be أَنْthat تَكُbe الأَرْوَاحُthe souls فِيat الحَشْرِthe Gathering زَاهِيَةْradiant
Ramadan has come, O servants, so gird yourselves.
May the souls be radiant at the Gathering.
لَهُto it تَنْحَنِيbow كُلُّall الشُّهُورِthe months كَرَامَةًin honor
فَمِنْfor, from دُونِهِapart from it أَيَّامُنَاour days جِدُّvery وَاهِيَةْfeeble
All the months bow to it in honor.
For without it, our days are very feeble.
فَيَاso, O نَبْضُpulse لَاdo not تَشْرُدْstray وَلَاand do not تَكُbe لَاهِياًdistracted
لَهَاgrew distracted النَّفْسُthe soul إِنْif عَنْهُof it النَّوَابِضُthe pulses لَاهِيَةْheedless
So, O pulse, do not stray, and do not be distracted.
The soul grows distracted if the pulses are heedless of it.
عَلَىupon مُسْلِمِيthe Muslims of الدُّنْيَاthe world يُطِلُّappears بِوَجْهِهِwith its face
كَطَلَّةِlike the appearance of شَمْسٍa sun فِيin دُجَىthe darkness of اللَّيْلِnight بَاهِيَةْradiant
It shows its face to the Muslims of the world,
Like a radiant sun appearing in the darkness of night.
إِذَاwhen جَاءَit comes، جَاءَcomes العَفْوُforgiveness مَعْهُwith it مُلَازِماًinseparably accompanying
فَيَشْدُوso it sings الجَوَىyearning حُبّاًwith love بِدُونِwithout كَرَاهِيَةْhatred
When it comes, forgiveness comes with it as a constant companion.
So yearning sings with love, without hatred.
