    سألت عليك وناديتك

  2. لقيتك فى السماء نجمة

    لقيتك فى الصفاء نسمة

    I found you in the sky—a star.

    I found you in serenity—a breeze.

  3. لقيتك فى الصبا كلمة

    وناجيتك وما رديت

    I found you in youth—a word.

    And I confided in you, but you did not reply.

  4. شكيت لي طيفك الأيام

    وحدثتك حديث الروح

    I complained to your phantom about the days.

    And I spoke to you with the soul's words.

  5. سألتك وين .. وين وكيف

    هواك أوهام .. ووعدك زيف

    I asked you: where... where, and how?

    Your love is illusion, and your promise is falsehood.

  6. وطول ايامى بلقاك طيف

    وناجيتك وما رديت

    And throughout my days, I find you a phantom.

    And I confided in you, but you did not reply.

  7. سهرت مع ملاحم شوق

    وفى احضانى نام الليل صحيتو

    I kept vigil with epics of longing.

    And in my arms the night slept; I woke it.

  8. صحيت نجمة ترعى حبيب

    وصحيت شمعة تشقى لهيب

    I woke a star that watches over a beloved.

    And I woke a candle, tormented by flame.

  9. تمنيت وأنت طيف ما تغيب

    وناجيتك وأنت ما رديت

    I wished that, though you were a phantom, you would not vanish.

    And I confided in you, yet you did not reply.
