They killed you in Muhammad's name, and you killed them, O philosopher of the age, in Muhammad's name.

They killed you with the injustice inflicted on Husayn; whoever dies steadfast in his conviction dies a martyr.

And you killed them—they are Yazid and his band—slain men assailed by the aggressor's torment.

And you revived Karbala's memory at Kober; the sons of Umayya inflamed tomorrow's breast.

They bore you above the cloud-tops—out of fear, or is that your station in soaring heights?

And you descended not to the dust, but into the embrace of the ever-renewing giver's waves.

O you who walk steadfast of heart, as though summoned by the one who promises, not the one who threatens.

O you who knew God through reason, and pierced the serenity of night prayer and worship.

I swore, O Mahmoud, that you were an 'atheist' by decree of an atheist of deranged faith.

Your executioner took his time; then, when you came to him, fearless in an unyielding frame,

you terrified him, and his breaths came fast, like one trembling, fearful and hesitant.

Your judge took no warning from your age, and resorted to a vile deed born of his dulled mind.

And I marveled at a killer who still loves the path he travels and follows.

Indeed, retribution is blood flowing upon blood, and one hand cut off by another in return.

If you kill him, that is the justice of a law from one truthful in his revelation—from Ahmad.

They wronged Islam in the name of a law devised by a two-horned man with a mercenary hand.

They harnessed it to a dubious purpose; is guidance coercing one who has found no guidance

except through their suspect guidance and the force with which hard-hearted judges pounced?

Only a polytheist disparages Islam; you are indeed the noblest believer and monotheist.

Forever, Islam is a religion of love, tolerance, mutual compassion and affection.

O men! How the distant one is brought near by sorrow; alas for you, so near yet sent far away!

Lions stand firm and fierce in battle; as for flight, it is the would-be lion's goal.

And indeed you stood firm; the day of their flight came, and they made threats in a refuge itself under threat.
