My young she-camel shied from a lava field's stones,
My arteries shivered from the burning rocks
built up over an open-handed, bountiful man.
Built by the palms and panic

Do not shy from him, O old she-camel, for he was
Do not shiver, oh fang, for it is
a buyer of wine, a kindler of wars.
A heated wine for wars
لَولاwere it not for السَفارُthe journey وَبُعدُand the distance خَرقٍa vast expanse مَهمَهٍa trackless wilderness

Were it not for the journey and the distance across a vast, trackless waste,
If not for the embassy and the far torn valley
I would have left her crawling on her hocks.
I'd have let it wander on the meadow
فَرَّfled الفَوارِسُthe horsemen عَنaway from رَبيعَةَRabīʿa بَعدَماafter

The horsemen fled from Rabīʿa after
The knights fled from Rabia after he
he had saved them from crushing anguish.
Saved them from the gloom of anguish

He called to ʿAlī when his back was left unguarded;
He invokes Ali when he surrendered his back
and indeed, there you called to one who would not answer.
You have invoked there unresponsive

God bless the sons of ʿAlī! Indeed, they
Praiseworthy are the sons of Ali, for they
did not stir up a raid like the lapping of a wolf.
Did not raid like the ravaging wolf

A fine young man was he who gave Nabīsha his armor,
What a great lad who performed Nabisha
on the day of al-Kadīd—Nabīsha son of Ḥabīb.
On the day of Kadid, Nabisha son of Habib

May Rabīʿa son of Makaddam never be far away,
Rabia ibn Makdam shall not be far
and may the morning rainclouds water his grave with a brimming bucketful.
And he quenched his grave with sins
