Qurhan’s delegation braved a long journey toward me,

on which the sturdy she-camel spends the day exhausted.

So I provisioned them with a dog, and they departed as though

a prince had favored them with al-Hurmuzan’s crown.

And I hung something round their necks: had I struck Mutaliʿ

with it, dust-covered as it is, it would almost have flown.

So, rider, if you happen by, be sure to tell

Umamah this from me, while fortunes turn:

So do not abandon your mother, nor your dog,

for mistreating mothers is a grave offense.

For you are a dog, grown accustomed to what you see,

hearing keenly, seeing clearly what goes on upon the bed.

When, toward night’s end, a puff of smoke billows,

his growling lasts all night upon the bed.
