Whoever's camp may be in Medina this evening,

I and Qayyar are indeed strangers there.

So do not fret, Qayyar, over a night's confinement,

Until our case is decided for us; then we shall return.

Nor do swiftly passing birds bring a man

Success, nor does he fail because they linger.

And many things do you no harm at all,

Yet the heart pounds from fear of them.

So there is no good in one who does not steel himself

For time's calamities when they strike.

And in doubt lies negligence, and in prudence lies strength.

And a man, in his guessing, is sometimes wrong and sometimes right.

And you will keep neither friend nor brother,

If you do not overlook a matter even when it arouses doubt.
