O star of perfection and full moon of sound judgment,

for the land, wearing mourning is too little.

    وتمتَ فنامت أماني البلاد

    You set, and the stars of greatness disappeared;

and you died, and the land's hopes fell asleep.

We knew you as the tenderest-hearted of humankind,

and the most mindful of friendship's bonds,

and the most compassionate toward bleeding eyes,

and the most sensitive to grievous calamities.

Why, then, did you leave us and make our

hearts bleed, so that even inanimate things pitied them?

You departed when we were in greatest need

of you; how can we endure separation?

So we spent the night bewildered before calamities,

and spent it as though wandering aimlessly in a valley.

Had you been ransomable, you would have been ransomed

with two thousand brave men and two thousand generous ones.

    ولو انصفوا انزلوك الفؤاد

    You descended into a tomb, dark all around;

had they been just, they would have laid you in the heart.

Indeed, you dwell in every heart,

and love for you will last until the Day of Resurrection.

Your memory will reign among the people,

as Joseph's memory reigned in Egypt.

For Joseph held famine at bay for a time,

but your bounty among us has no end.

Your renown indeed filled the land,

with every singer and chanting camel-driver extolling it.

Your bounty was pure, limpid water,

around whose watering-place every thirsty soul circled.

And your counsel, in difficult matters,

when they grew dark, was a ray of sound judgment.

Since you vanished, we have melted in sorrow and anguish,

and the eye has not tasted sleep.

And how can the eyes bear slumber,

with calamity's qatad thorns within them?

Grievous to us is the loss of a star,

radiant, fallen from the sky of right guidance.

Grievous to religion is the loss

of an eminent scholar, a towering pillar.

So, O Time, feel safe, for the one

whose cutting edge you feared has returned to God.

    كذاك الأُسود اغتيالاً تُصاد

    You struck him down treacherously in the darkness;

thus are lions hunted: by stealth.

How, then, did you wound the hearts of humankind,

and strike the flint of sorrow within them?

Is it not unjust to gather

ears of grain before harvest time?

How grievous was the calamity that showed us the

crashing of thunderbolts in every assembly!

We heard its roar throughout the land,

like thunder crashing in the depths of valleys.

We heard it in the hearts of enemies—

the ringing of arrows and the clash of iron.

If the loss makes even enemies' hearts bleed,

then the departed is a loss to all humankind.

O Lebanon, pour out tears in torrents,

and share the night-stars' sleepless vigil.

And let lamentations flow in every direction,

and never cast off your garments of black.

O Lebanon, rend your heart for

a sage through whom you attained your desire.

O Lebanon, inscribe this grievous calamity

on the heart with tears, not ink.

Rather, carve it into your breast and give it

a frame of sorrow from the blood of blackness.

O Lebanon, grieve for a father,

in whose loss you lost your armament against calamities.

Who, then, will face difficulties when they defy solution?

And who will set the age right in a time of corruption?

And who will face calamities when they grow overpowering?

And who will uphold judgment when justice has perished?

Oh, my heart's anguish for one departed,

in whose loss we lost our sword in combat.

If patience is hard to find at his death,

then joy's market has fallen into a slump.

May God pour upon his tomb

showers of pardon, one shower after another,

and settle him in the gardens on high,

in a lofty abode, as reward for his striving.
