What neck among languages is like mine,

Which poetry's hand has adorned with necklaces?

They soared like eagles in the heights, and hunted

Whatever they found unique among meanings.

And how often the pulpits were swayed with pride

By my orators—and they made solid rock dance!

Wise sayings that set the wayward on the right path.

A custom from which I cannot bear to turn.

Whatever pledge I made, from it came

Fetters around my neck, piled upon fetters.

How can I fear the onslaughts of the nights' misfortunes,

With Lebanon before me, making lions bleed?
