    يبدو به شَنَباً على ثغرِ

    I swear by the beauty of dew among the blossoms,

    gleaming there like the fresh brightness of teeth in a mouth;

    فأرى انثناء العطف كالكسرِ

    or by the breeze when it bends a bough,

    so I see its side bend as though it were breaking;

    or by the boughs crowned with blossoms,

    thus bringing you necks and beads of gold:

    indeed, I sought help against the suffering in

    the affairs of love, and love sealed my fate.

    And a collared dove with whom I shared my grief,

    while darkness wore a collar of dawn,

    sings upon a swaying, drunken bough

    that drank dew instead of wine.

    The bough quivers with delight in him; and when

    he sings, it scatters dirhams of blossom.

    So I fancied ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq bestowing gifts on him,

    giving generously whenever I recited my verse.

    والحسنُ في الأسلاكِ للنحرِ

    And to you I offer it, its charms delightful;

    and beauty strung on threads is for the neck.

    I set my mind to work on it before dawn,

    so it drew from that hour and brought forth magic.
