سَعِدَwere blessed الَّذِينَthose who تَجَنَّبُواthey shunned سُبُلَthe paths of الرَّدَىruin
سَعِدَ الَّذِينَ تَجَنَّبُوا سُبُلَ الرَّدَى
وَتَيَمَّمُواand they headed لِمَنَاِزِلِfor the abodes of الرِّضْوانِdivine good pleasure
وَتَيَمَّمُوا لِمَنَاِزِلِ الرِّضْوانِ
Blessed are those who shunned the paths of ruin
And set their course for the abodes of divine good pleasure.
فَهُمُfor they الَّذِينَthose who أَخْلَصُواthey were sincere فِيin مَشْيِهِمْtheir journey
فَهُمُ الَّذِينَ أَخْلَصُوا فِي مَشْيِهِمْ
مُتَشَرِّعِينَadhering to religious law بِشِرْعَةِaccording to the law of الإيمَانِfaith
مُتَشَرِّعِينَ بِشِرْعَةِ الإيمَانِ
For they are those who were sincere in their journey,
Adhering to the law of faith.
وَهُمُand they الَّذِينَthose who بَنَوْاthey built مَنَازِلَthe stations of سَيْرِهِمْtheir journey
وَهُمُ الَّذِينَ بَنَوْا مَنَازِلَ سَيْرِهِمْ
بَيْنَbetween الرَّجَاhope والْخَوْفِand fear لِلدَيَّانِof the Requiter
بَيْنَ الرَّجَا والْخَوْفِ لِلدَيَّانِ
And they are those who built the stations of their journey
Between hope in the Requiter and fear of Him.
وَهُمُand they الَّذِينَthose who مَلاfilled الإلَهُGod قُلُوبَهُمْtheir hearts
وَهُمُ الَّذِينَ مَلا الإلَهُ قُلُوبَهُمْ
بِوِدَادِهِwith love for Him وَمَحَبَّةِand love for الرَّحْمَنِthe Most Merciful
بِوِدَادِهِ وَمَحَبَّةِ الرَّحْمَنِ
And they are those whose hearts God has filled
With love for Him and love for the Most Merciful.
وَهُمُand they الَّذِينَthose who أَكْثَرُواthey abounded مِنْin ذِكْرِهِremembering Him
وَهُمُ الَّذِينَ أَكْثَرُوا مِنْ ذِكْرِهِ
فِيin السِّرِprivate وَالإِعْلاَنِand public وَالأَحْيَانِand times
فِي السِّرِ وَالإِعْلاَنِ وَالأَحْيَانِ
And they are those who abounded in remembering Him,
In private, in public, and at all times.
يَتَقَرَّبُونَthey draw near إِلَىto الْمَلِيكِthe Sovereign بِفِعْلِهِمْby their performing
يَتَقَرَّبُونَ إِلَى الْمَلِيكِ بِفِعْلِهِمْ
طَاعَاتِهِacts of obedience to Him وَالتَّرْكِand abandonment لِلْعِصْيَانِof disobedience
طَاعَاتِهِ وَالتَّرْكِ لِلْعِصْيَانِ
They draw near to the Sovereign by performing
Acts of obedience to Him and by abandoning disobedience.
فِعْلُperforming الْفَرَائِضِthe obligatory duties وَالنَّوَافِلِand voluntary devotions دَأْبُهُمْtheir constant practice
فِعْلُ الْفَرَائِضِ وَالنَّوَافِلِ دَأْبُهُمْ
مَعْwith رُؤْيَةِrecognition of التَّقْصِيرِshortcoming وَالنُّقْصَانِand deficiency
مَعْ رُؤْيَةِ التَّقْصِيرِ وَالنُّقْصَانِ
Performing obligatory duties and voluntary devotions is their constant practice,
While recognizing their shortcomings and deficiencies.
صَبَرواthey made steadfast النُّفُوسَthe souls عَلَىthrough الْمَكَارِهِhardships كُلِّهَاall of them
صَبَروا النُّفُوسَ عَلَى الْمَكَارِهِ كُلِّهَا
شَوْقًاout of longing إِلَىfor مَاwhat فِيهِis in it مِنْof إِحْسَانِgoodness
شَوْقًا إِلَى مَا فِيهِ مِنْ إِحْسَانِ
They made their souls endure all hardships,
Longing for the goodness therein.
نَزَلُواthey alighted بِمَنْزِلَةِat the station of الرِّضَاcontentment فَهُمُso they بِهَاin it
نَزَلُوا بِمَنْزِلَةِ الرِّضَا فَهُمُ بِهَا
قَدْindeed أَصْبَحُواthey have become فِيin جُنَّةٍshelter وَأَمَانِand safety
قَدْ أَصْبَحُوا فِي جُنَّةٍ وَأَمَانِ
They alighted at the station of contentment, and there
Have come to dwell in shelter and safety.
شَكَرُواthey thanked الْذِيthe One who أَوْلَىbestowed upon الْخَلاَئِقَcreated beings فَضْلَهُHis bounty
شَكَرُوا الْذِي أَوْلَى الْخَلاَئِقَ فَضْلَهُ
بِالْقَلْبِwith the heart وَالأَقْوَالِand words وَالأَرْكَانِand limbs
بِالْقَلْبِ وَالأَقْوَالِ وَالأَرْكَانِ
They thanked the One who bestowed His bounty upon creation,
With heart, words, and limbs.
صَحِبُواthey kept company with التَّوَكُّلَtrust in God فِيin جَمِيعِall أُمُورِهِمْtheir affairs
صَحِبُوا التَّوَكُّلَ فِي جَمِيعِ أُمُورِهِمْ
مَعْwith بَذْلِexerting جُهْدٍeffort فِيin رِضَاthe pleasure of الرَّحْمَنِthe Most Merciful
مَعْ بَذْلِ جُهْدٍ فِي رِضَا الرَّحْمَنِ
They took trust in God as their companion in all their affairs,
While exerting themselves to please the Most Merciful.
عَبَدُواthey worshipped الإِلَهَGod عَلَىwith اعْتِقَادِbelief in حُضُورِهِHis presence
عَبَدُوا الإِلَهَ عَلَى اعْتِقَادِ حُضُورِهِ
فَتَبَوَّؤُواso they settled فِيin مَنْزِلِthe station of الإِحْسَانِexcellence
فَتَبَوَّؤُوا فِي مَنْزِلِ الإِحْسَانِ
They worshipped God with firm belief in His presence,
And so took their place at the station of excellence.
نَصَحُواthey sincerely counseled الْخَلِيقَةَcreation فِيin seeking رِضَاthe pleasure of مَحْبُوبِهِمْtheir Beloved
نَصَحُوا الْخَلِيقَةَ فِي رِضَا مَحْبُوبِهِمْ
بِالْعِلْمِthrough knowledge وَالإِرْشَاِدand guidance وَالإِحْسَانِand kindness
بِالْعِلْمِ وَالإِرْشَاِد وَالإِحْسَانِ
They sincerely counseled creation to please their Beloved,
Through knowledge, guidance, and kindness.
صَحِبُواthey kept company with الْخَلاَئِقَcreated beings بِالْجُسُومُin body وَإِنَّمَاbut in fact
صَحِبُوا الْخَلاَئِقَ بِالْجُسُومُ وَإِنَّمَا
أَرْوَاحُهُمْtheir spirits فِيin مَنْزِلٍan abode فَوْقَانِيon high
أَرْوَاحُهُمْ فِي مَنْزِلٍ فَوْقَانِي
They kept company with creation in body, yet
Their spirits dwell in an abode on high.
بِاللهby God دَعواتsupplications of الْخَلاَئِقcreated beings كُلهَاall of them
بِالله دَعوات الْخَلاَئِق كُلهَا
خَوْفًاout of fear عَلَىfor الإِيمَانِfaith مِنْof نُقْصَانِdiminishment
خَوْفًا عَلَى الإِيمَانِ مِنْ نُقْصَانِ
By God, all the supplications of creation [wording unclear],
For fear that faith might diminish.
عَزَفُواthey turned aside الْقُلُوبَthe hearts عَنِfrom الشَّوَاغِلِdistractions كُلِّهَاall of them
عَزَفُوا الْقُلُوبَ عَنِ الشَّوَاغِلِ كُلِّهَا
قَدْindeed فَرَّغُوهَاthey emptied them مِنْof سِوَىall but الرَّحْمَنِthe Most Merciful
قَدْ فَرَّغُوهَا مِنْ سِوَى الرَّحْمَنِ
They turned their hearts away from all distractions;
They have emptied them of all but the Most Merciful.
حَرَكَاتُهُمْtheir movements وَهُمُومُهُمْand their concerns وَعُزُومُهُمْand their resolves
حَرَكَاتُهُمْ وَهُمُومُهُمْ وَعُزُومُهُمْ
لِلَّهِfor God، لاَnot لِلْخَلْقِfor creation وَالشَّيْطَانِand Satan
لِلَّهِ، لاَ لِلْخَلْقِ وَالشَّيْطَانِ
Their movements, their concerns, and their resolves
Are for God, not for creation or Satan.
نِعْمَexcellent is الرَّفِيقُthe companion لِطَالِبِfor a seeker of السُبُلِthe paths الَّتِيthat
نِعْمَ الرَّفِيقُ لِطَالِبِ السُبُلِ الَّتِي
تُفْضِيlead إِلىto الخَيْرَاتِgood things وَالإِحْسَانِand excellence
تُفْضِي إِلى الخَيْرَاتِ وَالإِحْسَانِ
What a fine companion for one seeking the paths
That lead to good things and excellence!
