    Zulayma severed my friendship and correspondence,

    and drew away, begrudging a departing traveler his provisions,

    in ignorance; Zulayma does not know that I

    may depart, breaking with one who will not maintain our bond.

    My riding camels are docile, escorting me wherever I wish,

    wherever I startle the land's unwary sandgrouse.

    O Zulaym, what do you know? Many a sweetheart—

    lovely in her displeasure, like a gazelle of al-Ha'il—

    I have spent the night possessing her and drinking wine,

    an antidotal draught, with which I gave my unbidden guest his fill,

    white and clear: beneath it can be seen

    the vessel's bottom; it lights the drinker's face.

    And I crossed a noonday mirage as it flowed

    above the hillocks, on a colored, unstinting she-camel,

    sturdy through her journeys, as though her shaggy coat were

    two wings from the shoulders of a fleeing ostrich.

    So we shall surely eat from our ready wealth,

    and surely drink on next year's credit.

    بدأوا بِبِرّ اللَهِ ثمَّ النائلِ

    I am of a people who, when they assemble,

    begin with piety toward God, then with gifts;

    والحاشدين على طعَامِ النازلِ

    who shield their neighbors from foul abuse,

    and rally to provide the arriving guest's meal;

    والباذلينَ عَطاءَهم للسائلِ

    and mingle their rich with their poor,

    and freely offer their gifts to those who ask;

    ضربَ المهنّدِ عن حياضِ الناهلِ

    and strike the ram of battle, his helmets flashing,

    with an Indian sword's stroke, defending the drinker's watering pools;

    والمُلحقينَ رماحَهم بالقاتلِ

    and wheel their horses against the battle ranks,

    and drive their spears into the slayer;

    والنازلينَ لضربِ كلّ مُنازلِ

    and overtake their foe to avenge their blood-feuds,

    and dismount to strike every challenger;

    and say together, 'Take on your opponents!

    Death lies behind the one who seeks escape!'

    يمشونَ مشي الأُسدِ تحت الوابِلِ

    Their eyes glower toward their enemies;

    they walk like lions beneath the downpour.

    They are neither weaklings nor wavering men; whenever

    war is kindled, they set it ablaze with its kindler.

    يشفون بالأَحلامِ داءَ الجاهلِ

    They incur no disgrace and, steadfast in their ancestral honor,

    cure the fool's malady with forbearance;

    and speak—so their orator is beyond reproach—

    on the day of debate, with decisive words.
