Listen! Who will carry word to the allies from me?

For counsel may be offered even to a sincere adviser.

For you, and what you send my way

Of words both frothy and plain—

    وما أَثرى اللِسانُ إِلى الجَرُوحِ

    Some of you will soon regret it;

And the tongue avails nothing against wounds.

My integrity and my proven valor have forbidden me—

And my earning praise at a profitable price,

And my giving my wealth despite hardship,

And my striking the head of the wary champion

With a grooved sword, bright as the color of salt,

And a soul that will not abide disgrace,

And my saying, whenever it recoils and surges,

'Stand your ground: be praised, or find rest,'

That I may defend worthy achievements

    And thereafter safeguard unblemished honor.

I hold wealth cheap among my people,

And shield them from the fate of the blank gaming-arrow.

Have forbidden me to fall short in my deeds

And to turn a blind eye to a shameful thing.

So either I depart with exalted honor,

Or I depart with death that brings rest.

Our ancestral honor gave generously; thus were laid bare

For us, by adversity, hides whole and sound.

And no shameful sores in us were revealed

By rain withheld or the milch camels' scant yield.
