I proclaimed my love for Juml—what a proclamation!

And her affair came to light after being concealed.

And the tale-bearers worked between us, coming and going,

until I kept away from her, without forsaking her.

Shall I reach her on a swift she-camel like a breeding male,

a sturdy, powerful beast, obedient beneath the saddle?

As though she were a white-flanked wild ass, driven off

from Mawan's water by an archer, once he had a clear shot.

Then the lean beast wheeled, like an iron skewer, with

two flanking clouds of dust amid the stony ground.

The hooves of his bowed hind legs plunge

into rough ground of flat, crumbly stones on the ridge.

He returned to Qutayyat's water, but it failed him,

and his watering place was a pool at Hawran.

The water's daughters linger there all day in whispering groups,

as though their eyes resembled beauty marks.

It did not frighten him; instead he waded into its depths,

quenching his burning thirst with fresh, unbrackish water.

What men their mother bore! We saw their chiefs yesterday,

the best of neighbors amid calamities that struck.

    يَعطِف كِرامٌ عَلى ما أَحدَثَ الجاني

    Those calamities graze every other day, even if they cease their daily visits;

noble men turn to redress what the wrongdoer has wrought.

And the two Hariths raced ahead to their goals,

effortlessly, as two noble steeds win the race.

And the two give their wealth in pursuit of praise,

and praise is bought only at a price.
