عِشْlive أَنْتَyou إنيindeed I مِتُdied بَعْدَكْafter you
وَأَطِلْand prolong إِلَىuntil مَاas long as شِئْتَyou wish صَدَّكْyour turning away
Live on; I have died since you left.
And prolong your turning away as long as you wish.
كَانَتْthere were بَقَايَاremnants لِلغَرَامِof love
بمهجتيin my heart فَخَتَمْتُso I ended بَعْدَكْafter you
Remnants of love still lingered
in my heart, but after you I put an end to them.
أَنْقَىpurer مِنthan الفَجْرِthe dawn الضَّحُوْكِthe smiling
وَقَدْand indeed أَعَرْتَyou lent الفَجْرَthe dawn خَدَّكْyour cheek
Purer than the smiling dawn,
though you lent the dawn your cheek;
وَأَرَقُand gentler مِنْthan طَبْعِthe nature of النَّسِيْمِthe breeze
فَهَلْso did خَلَعْتَyou drape عَلَيْهِover it بُرْدَكْyour cloak
and gentler than the nature of the breeze—
did you drape your cloak over it?
وألذand sweeter مِنْthan كَأْسِthe cup of النَّدِيْمthe companion
وَقَدْand indeed أَبَحْتَyou offered الكَأْسَthe cup شَهْدَكْyour honey
And sweeter than a companion’s cup,
though you offered the cup your honey.
مَاwhat كَانَwould have ضَرَّكَharmed you لَوْif عَدَلْتَyou were fair
أَمَاhave not رَأَتْseen عَيْنَاكَyour eyes قَدَّكْyour figure
What harm would it have done you to be fair?
Have your eyes not seen your own beauty?
وَجَعَلْتَand you made مِنْof جَفْنَيَّmy two eyelids مُتَّكَأًa resting place
وَمِنْand of عَيْنَيَّmy two eyes مَهْدَكْyour cradle
You made my eyelids a resting place
and my eyes your cradle.
إِنْif لَمْnot يَكُنْit was أدبيmy courtesy فَخُلْقُكَthen your character
كَانَwas أَوْلَىmore fitting أَنْto يَصُدَّكْrestrain you
If my courtesy could not restrain you, your own character
should have been more reason to hold you back.
أَغَضَاضَةًan offense يَاO رَوْضُgarden إِنْif
أَنَاI شاقنيdrew me in فَشَمَمْتُso I smelled وَرْدَكْyour roses
Is it an offense, O garden, if
you drew me in and I smelled your roses?
وَمَلامَةًand blame يَاO قَطْرُrain إِنْif
أَنَاI راقنيdelighted me فَأَمَمْتُso I sought وِرْدَكْyour watering place
And is it blameworthy, O rain, if
you delighted me and I sought your watering place?
وَحَيَاةِby the life of عَيْنِكَyour eyes وَهِىَand it is عنديto me
مِثْلَمَاjust as الإِيْمَانُfaith عِنْدَكْto you
By the life of your eyes, which is to me
what faith is to you:
مَاnot قَلْبُthe heart of أُمِّكَyour mother إِنْif تُفَارِقُهًاyou leave her
وَلَمْand not تَبْلُغْyou reach أَشُدُّكْyour full strength
Your mother’s heart, if you leave her
before you have reached maturity,
فَهَوَتْso she rushed عَلَيْكَtoward you بِصَدْرِهَاwith her breast
يَوْمَon the day of الفِرَاقِparting لِتَسْتَرِدَّكْto reclaim you
and she rushes toward you, breast first,
on the day of parting to reclaim you,
بِأَشَدَّany stronger مِنْthan خَفَقَانِthe beating of قلبيmy heart
يَوْمَon the day قِيْلَit was said خَفَرْتَyou broke عَهْدَكْyour pledge
beats no harder than my heart
on the day they said you broke your pledge.
