أتَتْcame هِندُHind تشكوcomplaining إلىto أُمِّهاher mother
فَسُبحانَso glory be to مَنْthe One who جَمَعَjoined النَّيِّرَيْنْthe two luminaries
Hind came complaining to her mother.
So glory be to Him who joined the two luminaries!
فقالتْthen she said لهاto her إنَّindeed هذاthis الضُّحىmorning light
أتانيcame to me وَقَبَّلنيand kissed me قُبلَتَينtwo kisses
Then she said to her, "Indeed, this morning light
came to me and kissed me twice,
وفرَّand fled فَلَمَّاthen when رآنيsaw me الدُّجىnight's darkness
حَبانِيَhe gave me مَنْfrom شَعرِهِhis hair خُصلَتَينtwo locks
and fled; then, when night's darkness saw me,
he gave me two locks of his hair.
وماand did not خافَfear ياO أمِّmy mother بلrather ضَمَّنيhe embraced me
وألقىand he laid علىupon مَبْسميmy smiling mouth نَجْمَتَيْنtwo stars
And he was not afraid, Mother, but embraced me
and laid two stars upon my smiling mouth.
وَand ذَوَّبَhe melted مِنْfrom لَونِهِhis color سائلاًa liquid
وَكَحَّلنيand applied kohl to me مِنهُfrom it فيin المُقلَتَينthe two eyes
And he melted some of his color into a liquid
and with it lined both my eyes with kohl.
وجئتُand I came إلىto الرَّوضthe garden ياO رَوضَتيmy garden
وَهَمَّand he intended ليفعلَto do كالأوّلَيْنlike the first two
And I came to the garden, O my garden,
and he meant to do as the first two had.
فخبَّأتُso I hid وَجهيmy face ولَكِنَّهُbut he
إلىtoward الصَّدرthe bosom ياO أمِّmy mother مَدّhe stretched out اليدينboth hands
So I hid my face, but he
stretched both hands toward my bosom, Mother.
وياand oh دَهشتيmy amazement حينwhen فَتَّحتُI opened عَينيmy eye
وشاهدتُand I saw فيin الصَّدرِthe bosom رُمّانَتَينtwo pomegranates
And oh, my amazement when I opened my eye
and saw two pomegranates in my bosom!
وماand did not زالcease بيwith me الغُصنُthe branch حتَّىuntil انحنىhe bent down
علىat قدَميmy foot ساجداًprostrating himself سَجدَتَينtwo prostrations
And the branch kept at me until he bent
at my foot, prostrating himself twice.
وكانand there were علىupon رأسهِhis head وَردتانِtwo roses
فقدَّمَso he offered ليto me تَينِكَthose two الوَردَتَينthe two roses
There were two roses upon his head,
so he offered me those two roses.
وَخِفْتُand I was afraid منَof الغُصنِthe branch إذwhen تَمتَمَتْmurmured
بأُذْنيَinto my ear أوراقُهُhis leaves كِلْمتَينtwo words
And I feared the branch when
his leaves murmured two words into my ear.
فرُحْتُso I went إلىto البحرthe sea للإبْتِرادِto cool off
فَحَمَّلنيso he burdened me with وَيْحَهُwoe to him! مَوجَتَينtwo waves
So I went to the sea to cool off,
and he burdened me—woe to him!—with two waves.
فماso not سرتُI walked إلاexcept وقدand already ثارتاthey both surged up
بِردْفَيَّat my two haunches كالبحرlike the sea رَجْرَاجَتَينboth rippling
No sooner had I walked than both surged up
at my two haunches, rippling like the sea.
هوَhe البَحرُthe sea ياO أمِّmy mother كمhow many منof فتىًa youth
غريقٍdrowned وكمand how many مِنْof فتًىa youth بينَbetween بَيْنbetween
He is the sea, Mother: how many a youth
is drowned, and how many a youth is in between!
فهاso here أناI أشكوI complain of إليكِto you الجميعَthem all
فباللهso by God ياO أُمِّmy mother ماذاwhat تَرَيْنْdo you think
So here I am, complaining to you of them all;
so, by God, Mother, what do you think?"
فقالتthen she said، وقدand had already ضَحِكَتْshe laughed، أمُّهاher mother
وَماسَتْand she swayed منَfrom العُجْبِpride فيin بُردَتَينtwo mantles
Then her mother said, laughing,
and swaying with pride in two mantles:
عَرَفتُهُمُI have known them واحداًone واحداًone
وَand ذُقتُI tasted الَّذيwhat ذُقتِهِyou tasted it مَرَّتينtwice
"I have known them, one by one,
and have twice tasted what you tasted."
