Live on—I have died in your absence.

And prolong your rejection as long as you wish.

What harm would it have done you to be fair,

(Have your eyes not seen your own figure?)

To make of my eyelid a resting place,

And of my eye your cradle,

To raise through me the throne of love,

And raise your banner above the throne,

To restore to poets their master,

    And to lovers, your slave?

Is it shameful, O garden, if

Your roses stirred my longing and I breathed their scent?

    Purer than the smiling dawn—

So have you lent the dawn your cheek?

And gentler than the breeze's nature—

So have you bestowed your mantle upon it?

And sweeter than the drinking companion's cup—

So have you granted the cup your honey?

And by the life of your eye, which to me

Is what oaths are to you:

Your mother's heart, were you to leave her

Before you had come of age,

And she flung herself upon you, clasping you to her breast,

On the day of parting, to reclaim you,

Would pound no harder than my heart did

The day it was said, 'You have broken your pledge.'
