    O struggle that glory applauded,

Ask the heights of glory and Time about us.

The chivalrous virtues that lived within us

Still course as a blaze through our blood.

Tell John Bull, when you reproach him:

You will call us, and yet you will not see us.

And left religion's restraint behind us.

The desert cried out, lamenting its nakedness,

So we clothed it in roaring and smoke.

Since we watered it with glory from our blood,

It knew for certain that Ma'add had begotten us.

Our allies slaughtered without just cause.

Sow victory while others reap it?

Whenever you wave a reminder before them,

Our sin, while Time lay stricken,

Was that we kept faith with a loving brother, and he betrayed us.

And a moan that whispered confidences revealed—

An Arab moan—our eyes drank it in.

    Mighty souls that refuse humiliation.

And challenged you with sword and tongue.

He is a match for you—take your revenge,

And leave us to ask God for safety.

A touch in which our hands swim in perfume.

Rise; let us go hungry for them one day of our lives.

Count it as the Easter fast; count it as Ramadan.

Indeed, the right for which they died

Is our right; we walk toward it wherever it may be.
