You have worn me down with estrangement—how unjust you are!
So have mercy; may the Most Merciful have mercy on you.

So be gentle with it; may he who made you ruler give his life for you.
مَاhow كَانwere أحْلَىsweet قُبُلاتِkisses الهَوَىlove

How sweet love's kisses were!
If you do not remember, ask your mouth.
تَمُرُّyou pass بِيby me كَأَنَّنِيas though I لَمْnot أَكُنْI was
ثَغْرَكَyour lips أَوْor صَدْرَكَyour chest أَوْor مِعْصَمَكْyour wrist
You pass me by as though I had never been
your lips, or your chest, or your wrist.
لَوْif مَرَّpassed سَيْفٌa sword بَيْنَنَاbetween us لَمْnot نَكُنْwe were

Had a sword passed between us, we would not have
known whether it drew my blood or yours.
سَلْask الدُّجَىthe night كَمْhow much رَاقَنِيdelighted me نَدْمُهُits remorse
لَمَّاwhen حَكَيmirrored مَبْسَمَهُits smile مَبْسَمَكْyour smile
Ask the night how much its remorse delighted me,
when its smile mirrored your smile.
يَاO بَدْرُfull moon إِنْif وَاصَلْتَنِىyou keep treating me بِالْجَفَاwith coldness

O full moon, if you keep treating me coldly,
and I die in the prime of youth, enamored of you,
قُلْsay لِلدُّجَىto the night: مَاتَhas died شَهِيْدُthe martyr الْوَفَاfidelity

Tell the night: 'The martyr of fidelity has died;
so scatter your stars upon his shrouds.'
