ضاقgrew narrow الكلامthe words بناfor us واستفحلand grew overwhelming الألمُthe pain
والقادماتand the coming days بهاin them الأحزانsorrows تحتدمُrage
Words grew too narrow for us, and pain grew overwhelming.
Words fail us and pain grows intense,
And in the days to come, sorrows rage.
Sorrows approach with their waves foaming.
منwho يشعلsets ablaze القلبthe heart منfrom أطرافedges موردهits wellspring
ويتركand lets الليلthe night منon عينيّmy two eyes ينتقمُtake revenge
Who sets the heart ablaze from the edges of its wellspring
Who sets my heart aflame from its banks?
And lets the night take revenge on my eyes?
Leaving the night in my eyes to avenge.
جرّبتI tested فيon رحلةthe journey الأيامthe days راحلتيmy mount
وماand not عرفتI knew منfrom الأيامthe days ماwhat يَصِمُdisgraces
I tested my mount on the journey of days,
I tried the journey of days with my steed,
And from the days I knew nothing that brings disgrace.
Yet from the days I knew no deafening.
هذاthis الزمانage الذيwhich نحياwe live بهin it عجبa strange thing
ويحalas for الذيthe one who فيهin it قدhas زلتslipped بهwith him القدمُthe foot
This age in which we live is strange;
This age we live in is so strange,
Alas for the one whose foot has slipped in it.
Woe to whom in it my steps have stumbled.

وعانقand embraced الوقتَtime فيin أيامناour days العدمُnothingness
I fashioned songs, and poetry died on my lips.
I listened to songs and poetry died on my lips,
And nothingness embraced time in our days.
Nothingness embraced time in our days.

وضيّعand squandered الليلthe night فجراa dawn كانwas يبتسمُsmiling
The wound of sorrow became an old man in our homes.
The wound of sorrow grew old in our homes,
And the night squandered a dawn that was smiling.
Night wasted a dawn that used to smile.
كلall الكلامthe words الذيthat قلناهwe said it صارbecame سدىin vain
وعادand returned يطلعto rise منfrom أوراقناour pages الندمُregret
All the words we spoke have come to nothing.
All the words we've said became futile,
And regret began to rise again from our pages.
Regret now sprouts from our pages.

What have we reaped, when time has grown bewildered by us?
What have we reaped when time bewildered us?
Our message was lost, and the dream cried for help.
Our message was lost and dreams sought help.

Blood is our beginning, and today we bear it.
Our beginning was blood and today we carry it,
All existence is a mirage, O pen.
All existence is a mirage O pen.
هذيthese قصائدpoems أحلاميmy dreams أمزقهاI tear them apart
" فالصمتso silence أفضلthe best ماthat which يطوىis closed عليهover it فمُa mouth "
" فالصمت أفضل ما يطوى عليه فمُ "
These are the poems of my dreams; I tear them apart.
These are the poems of my dreams I tear apart,
So silence is the best thing a mouth can close upon.
"Silence is best folded upon the lips."
