Night passes through my secret, so I drape myself

Over my soul when stratagems fail me.

And I step into my distances without a horizon,

Like one to whose dreams afflictions have journeyed by night.

I am in bewilderment, with no sea to wade into,

So I might drown it—and we drown when we pray.

With whom do I grow impatient when my expanse narrows?

And whom, if they grew impatient with me, would boredom lead to me by night?

I am anxiety; I quell the wind within my anxiety.

And I coax myself away from myself, and depart.

When the days are bewildered by me, I leave them,

And from their shells I go forth and move on.

    رمادُ الحلم في كفيَّ يشتعلُ

    And if dreams are bewildered by me, I create them;

The dream's ashes blaze in my palms.

When secrets overflow with me, I conceal them,

Even if the eyes grow gray with love's secrets.

From myself I see what, were it fully comprehended,

Would exhaust the one by whom the paths are bewildered.
