Love was bewildered between us, and our state enticed us.

From our state, rapture prayed in the corners of our eyes.

From the idiom of silence, we reveal our confession in unease,

and confession comes to us from the unease of secrets.

He said: Grant my letters the names of their journey.

I said: The letters have been erased in shape and structure.

The expanse nearly vanished around us in passion,

when what had nearly concealed us shone forth within us.

Rapture carries us onward; its impulses envelop us,

and darkness fades at dawn from our nights.

We walk, and in our state, from the overflow of our ecstasy, lies

something that, if it appeared, would make the world rain fragrant herbs.

    لعلَّها من لظى الأسرار تكفينا

    He said: Borrow from things their wine;

perhaps it will shield us from the blaze of secrets.

The soul shines only when we kindle it

as a flood of confession whose secret flows within us.

O wind, do not go too far in unveiling our journey,

for the sand has hidden our songs since we came to be.

    ضمّي قصائدَنا لماّ توافينا

    Do not kindle the cold of visions as clouds in the expanse;

embrace our poems when you come to us,

and gather up what we forgot of love in every direction,

if wandering is prodigal with clay within our ribs.

It casts upon us visions that illuminate our distance,

so water rises from the blessings of our past.

    لعلَ رعشتها في القرب تحيينا

    And we release the letters cast into our blood;

perhaps their trembling in closeness will bring us to life.

I understood what his eyes revealed of my yearning,

as though our shadow had made its rounds, giving us drink.

I saw him emerge as a mirror that portrayed me,

and through me he saw the lovers’ state.

So I said: You are I. Bewildered, he said: I

saw what befell me—a rapture that torments us.

So I said: Be my home. He said: Dwell in my lung.

And he said: Indeed, love willed what we wished.
