I interpret through sand that cannot be interpreted.

I explain with sand that cannot be explained

And I begin unveiling poetry in silence, and so I see.

And I begin revealing poetry in silence, so observe

كأن احتكاك الروح بالصمت ردها

إلى دهشة في خاطر لا تخطرُ

إلى دهشة في خاطر لا تخطرُ

As though the soul's friction with silence had returned it

As if the soul's friction with silence returned it

To a wonder that never crosses the mind.

To an astonishment in a heart that does not occur

تسللت في المرآة كالصوت في الصدى

تسللت في المرآة كالصوت في الصدى

وظلي على المرآة بالحلم يقطرُ

وظلي على المرآة بالحلم يقطرُ

I slipped into the mirror like sound within an echo,

I slipped into the mirror like a sound in an echo

And my shadow on the mirror drips with the dream.

And my shadow on the mirror with dreams drips

فأولت من ظلي حروفا تشكلت

فأولت من ظلي حروفا تشكلت

كأني لظلي في التواشيح أسطرُ

كأني لظلي في التواشيح أسطرُ

So I interpreted letters that took shape from my shadow,

So I derived from my shadow letters that formed

As though I were writing for my shadow in the lyrical chants.

As if for my shadow in prayers I compose
