Today is a day of recreation and wine,

And of hopes and desires drawing near.

And do you not see that the day's sun has vanished

And hidden itself from the eyes of onlookers?

And the rain poured from its clouds, as though it were

A lovesick man who wept from the intensity of remembrance.

And lightning flashed from the sky, as though it were

A sword that gleamed in a sky of dust.

Nothing is finer on this day than attaining one's wishes

With wine that looks like a flame of fire.

Had fasting not kept me from drinking it,

I would have cast off my bridle this day.

If it could be lent, I would lend it,

And I would fast a month in place of a day.

But I have forgone its joy and its wine,

Until I am there with my fast broken.

And we pass it round in the cup among full-breasted maidens,

Who dispel cares with the melody of strings.

For their eyelids spare you the need for their cups,

And their cheeks spare you the need for flowers.
