    Did you know my sighing and moaning in your absence,

    and my yearning on the day of parting, and my sorrows?

    When you bade farewell, you left a longing in my breast,

    whose arrows never cease to strike me down.

    إِن رُمتُ صَبراً بِالأَسى يُغريني

    And the sentinel of longing for you is present, keeping watch;

    if I seek patience, he incites me to sorrow.

    Since your departure, I have not settled into rest

    for even a day, nor have my tear ducts run dry for you.

    فَاليَوم تَبكي بِالدِماء جُفوني

    I used to weep tears of dazzling white;

    but today my eyelids weep blood.

    Tell those who have claimed overwhelming love:

    If you wish to know love, then ask me.

    Indeed, I learned much of it from Urwa,

    and transmitted the rest from Majnun.

    فَإِن اِدَّعَيتُم غَيرَها فَأَروني

    This is our account from the elders of love;

    so if you claim another, then show it to me.

    O dwellers in the environs of Alij's sands,

    my right hand captured your unsuspecting gazelle,

    وَكَذاك عرف الرَوض غَيرُ مَصونِ

    in a garden whose fragrance the breeze betrayed;

    and so the garden's fragrance is not kept secret.

    And the gray doves sang from above the branches,

    showing you, through their melodies, such wondrous arts!

    The branches listen to what they say, then bend

    in rapture at their song—so marvel at the branches' sway!

    And the earth has donned robes of fine silk,

    crowned with hidden pearls.

    She vaunted herself above heaven's bright stars with her blossoms,

    and above the full moons with her auspicious face.
