The life of Yaʿqub ibn ʿAbd al-Haqq:

In it he has carried off the reeds of victory.

His practice is to read the Book,

And speak of the sciences and literature.

He stands in prayer for a third of the night,

Never turning aside from his regular devotions.

Until, when dawn appears and breaks,

He rises, prays to God, and bows.

And raises his voice in glorifying and hallowing God,

Until he completes his allotted recitation in the darkness of early dawn.

He first reads the book of biographies,

And the stories containing accounts of every kind.

Then diligently reads The Conquests of al-Sham,

And afterward the work known as al-Injad.

    His questions baffle the students,

And the most eminent scribes attending him.

He sits over the books until midmorning,

Then offers its prayer, as the righteous do.

And gives the scribes their orders,

In his affairs, both hidden and open.

And the elders of Marin enter,

For counsel and planning, and to lend splendor.

    His assembly harbors no wickedness,

Nor does any young man speak unjustly.

They seem like the radiant stars,

And among them Yaʿqub is like the full moon.

He has been clothed in dignity and serenity,

And has settled in a firmly established station.

Until, when the hour of noon arrives,

He rises and goes to the house of generosity and glory.

He remains until the time of the afternoon prayer,

Exercising moderation in his prohibitions and commands.

Thus he grants the wronged redress against their oppressor,

And continues until the night prayer.

Then he heads toward his noble home,

And leaves the vizier and the servant.

Then he sleeps at times, and at times

    Manages affairs and administration.

He sleeps at night only while keeping vigil,

Intent on jihad, inwardly and outwardly.

    مُبارك طالعه مَيمون

    I saw him, his way of life attended by firm dominion;

His ascendant is blessed and auspicious.

So he secured the West against corruption,

And spread justice among the people.

And left none in the West to act unjustly,

    And terrors and wickedness vanished.

And Marin bowed beneath his dominion,

And they obeyed his prohibitions and commands.

And he lifted oppression from the subjects,

And subdued the tyrants among humankind.

Have you, then, heard of a life like this,

    And these cherished noble deeds?

    بِذاك نالَ الملك وَالتَعظيما

    Such was his conduct of old;

Through that he attained kingship and veneration.
