The nights’ glow, when sorrow reveals it—

or Jannah’s phantom, which I spent the night recounting?

Gardens of Eden—or the gardens, O my homeland?

You recede far away, deepen the wound, and sear it.

It has been said: the age of love passed away, broken.

So how, how can I tend the wound and hide it?

Is this her heart, or do you see it as the sea in a rage,

recounting its pains, as its nights have grown long?

Azzouz, how many girls you used to know!

And today you are alone, with no phantom to confide in.

Even the one of whom you said, ‘Indeed, I give her a home in my heart,’

replaced you with a day in which you were no longer present.
