ماnot وَلَدَتنيbore me حاصِنٌa chaste woman رَبَعِيَّةٌof Rabiʿah
لَئِنif indeed أَناI مالَأتُsided with الهَوىdesire لِاِتِّباعِهاto follow her
No chaste woman of Rabīʿa bore me—
No chaste woman of Rabiʿah bore me,
if ever I conspire with passion to follow her.
if I ever sided with desire to follow her.
أَلَمdid you not تَرَsee أَنَّthat الأَرضَthe earth رَحبٌbroad فَسيحَةٌspacious
فَهَلso can تُعجِزَنيthwart me بُقعَةٌa tract of land مِنamong بِقاعِهاits tracts
Have you not seen that the earth is broad and spacious?
Have you not seen that the earth is broad and spacious?
Can any tract among its lands, then, lie beyond my reach?
Can one tract of it, then, thwart me?
وَمَبثوثَةٍand many a scattered host بَثَّthe scattering of الدَباyoung locusts مُبَطِرَّةٍswollen with pride
رَدَدتُI drove back عَلىupon بِطائِهاits slow ones مِنsome of سِراعِهاits swift ones
And many a host, scattered like locusts and proud in its might,
And many a host, scattered like young locusts and swollen with pride,
I drove its swift back upon its slow;
I drove some of its swift ones back upon its slow.
وَأَقدَمتُand I advanced وَالخَطِّيُّwhile the Khattian spear يَخطِرُswayed بَينَناbetween us
لِأَعلَمَto learn مَنwho جَبانُهاits coward مِنfrom شُجاعِهاits brave one
I charged while the Khaṭṭī spear swayed between us,
And I advanced while the Khattian spear swayed between us,
to tell its coward from its brave.
to tell the coward among them from the brave.
