Ibn Jurmuz's treachery against a formidable knight,

On the day of battle, when he was no man to flee.

O Amr, had you roused him, you would have found him

Neither reckless nor trembling in heart or hand.

How many a battle's tumult he plunged into, undeterred

From it by your charges, O son of the rocky hill's truffle!

So go—your hands have never overcome his equal

Among those gone before, who went forth at evening and dawn.

Indeed, al-Zubayr was a man of genuine valor,

Generous in nature, noble in presence.

May your mother be bereft of you, for you have indeed killed a Muslim!

The punishment of a deliberate killer is your due.
