فَللّهso, to God عيناthe two eyes مَنwhoever رَأىsaw مثلهُlike him فتىًa young man
أَكرّfiercer in attack وَأَحمىand stauncher in defense فيin الهياجِbattle وَأَصبراand more steadfast
God bless the eyes of whoever saw a young man like him—
The eyes of the one who saw the likes of him, a young man
fiercer in attack, stauncher in defense amid battle, and more steadfast.
More generous and more zealous in fury, and more patient
إِذاwhen أُشرعتwere leveled فيهِat him الأسنّةthe spearheads خاضَهاhe plunged among them

When spearheads were leveled at him, he plunged among them,
When the tongues turn towards him, he plunged into them
toward death, until he left the spear red.
Towards death, until he left the spear red
وَآليتُand I have sworn لاnot تنفكّcease to be عينيmy eye حزينةًsorrowful

And I have sworn that my eye shall never cease its sorrow
And I swore my teary eyes will not cease to weep
for you, nor shall my skin cease to be dust-covered,
For you, nor will my dusty skin cease to be ashy

through all time, as long as a dove sings in a thicket,
As long as time lasts, no dove in the valley cooed
and as long as night drives away the radiant morning.
Nor did the dawn with its light expel the night
رُزئتI was bereaved بخيرِof the best الناسِof people بعدَafter نبيّهمtheir Prophet
وَبعدَand after أَبيAbu بكرBakr وماand not كانَhe had قصّراfallen short
I was bereaved of the best of men after their Prophet,
I was pleased with the best of people after their prophet
and after Abu Bakr—and he had never fallen short.
And after Abu Bakr, he who did not fall short
