منعَkept away الرقادَsleep فعادَand so revisited عينيَmy eye عودُrecurring grief
ممّاbecause of what تضمّنheld قلبيَmy heart المعمودُgrief-stricken
A recurring grief kept sleep away and revisited my eye,
Sleep evaded me, so my eyes became accustomed
because of what my grief-stricken heart held.
To what filled my baptized heart,
ياO ليلةًnight حسبتwere counted عليّagainst me نجومهاits stars
فَسهرتُهاso I stayed awake through it وَالشامِتونَwhile those who gloat هجودُasleep
O night whose stars were counted against me!
O night, I blamed its stars,
So I stayed awake through it, while those who gloated slept.
So I stayed up while the blamers slept,
قَدindeed كانَused to يسهرنيkeep me awake حذاركَfear for you مرّةًonce
فَاليومَso today حقّis due لعينيَfor my eye التسهيدُsleeplessness
Fear for you once kept me awake;
Your avoidance once kept me up,
so today sleeplessness is my eye's due.
But today, it's right that my eyes rest,
أَبكيI weep for أَميرَCommander المؤمنينَthe Faithful ودونهُand barring access to him
لِلزائِرينfor the visitors صفائحٌstone slabs وصعيدُand earth
I weep for the Commander of the Faithful; between him
I cry for the Commander of the Faithful, and for him,
and those who visit lie stone slabs and earth.
Pilgrims have plates and dust.
