Today, someone like me means little to you, though I never

imagined for a day that I would come to mean so little.

My humiliation pleases you, and I can no longer recognize my dignity

in your presence; your heart grows hard while I grow tender.

How long shall I hope, when hope betrays me

and my heart, despite all its troubles, remains faithful?

I would give my life for you. Can someone like me hope for mercy

from you? And have I any helper in my love for you?

How can I bear being apart from you when longing has thwarted me?

Your affair has exhausted me, and I cannot speak plainly.

This separation casts great distances between us,

with plains and rugged hills lying in our way.

I wished that you and I might meet,

    if only wishes were destined to come true;

that my gaze and yours might meet for a moment,

so a soul might rest, or eyes find peace.

Or else, let an apparition of you visit me

when night falls and longing is stirred.

I would give my life for you: my heart is in your keeping, a trust,

and you are its guardian for as long as I live.
